When is a root canal treatment necessary?

Inside a tooth or molar is living tissue containing nerves and blood vessels, among other things. This tissue can become inflamed, for example due to tooth decay, a leaking filling, or damage to the tooth or molar.

Inflammation can cause various symptoms. These include persistent pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, pain while chewing, or swelling. Sometimes, an inflamed or dead nerve causes few symptoms, and the inflammation is discovered during a check-up or on an X-ray.

When the tissue in the root canals is inflamed or dead, the body cannot repair it on its own. A root canal treatment may then be necessary to treat the inflammation and save the tooth.

How does a root canal treatment proceed?

Before we begin, we numb the tooth. Next, we make a small opening to access the root canals. The inflamed or dead tissue is removed, and the canals are carefully cleaned and disinfected.

Next, we fill and seal the root canals. The tooth is also restored with a filling. Depending on the situation, the treatment can be completed in one appointment or multiple appointments may be required.

During the treatment process, we clearly explain the steps we are taking. This way, you always know where you stand.

Does a root canal treatment hurt?

A root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia. As a result, the treatment itself should not be painful. We understand that the idea of a root canal treatment can still cause anxiety. Therefore, please feel free to let us know if you are apprehensive about anything or have any questions.

After the treatment, the tooth or molar may be temporarily sensitive. This post-treatment pain usually subsides on its own. If you experience severe pain, if swelling occurs, or if you are concerned about the recovery, please contact us.
